About Gracie

Gracie

Gracie is a 8-year-old who loves to cook, do crafts, read, eat popcorn, wear anything pink, and go to school.  She’s an incredibly intelligent girl who has a lot of personality and is a total sweetheart!  Her family consists of her parents, May and John and her older brother Jack (9) and little sister, Bella (4).

Diagnosis and Treatment

In March 2008, Gracie was diagnosed with a brain tumor – a low-grade brain stem glioma.

2009 was a year full of treatments at Cook Children’s Medical Center in Ft. Worth, TX.  After the diagnosis in 2008, surgery was done to see if they could remove any of the tumor.  They discovered that the tumor had grown like a web through parts of her brain, especially around her brain stem and spinal cord. They were not able to remove any of it and recommended chemotherapy and radiation as treatment.

Gracie underwent both chemo and radiation like a champ.  Unfortunately neither has stopped the tumor’s growth and the latest MRI showed that it is still slowly growing.  The Kelly’s have sought out further advice from other leading hospitals in the country but at this time, Gracie has already received the treatments that could possibly help cure her.  As of May 2009, she began receiving hospice care.

In the summer of 2009 the Kelly’s spent time  traveling and enjoying time away from hospitals, appointments and tests.  They visited Galveston, TX, Orlando & Disney, several places in North Carolina, California, Oregon and Chicago where they spent a lot of time with friends and family.

The Network of Support

They have received an amazing amount of support from John’s co-workers at American Airlines, several churches, including their own (Gateway), their Awana group, the staff and students at Whitley Elementary school, Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Forever Trinity Dream Foundation and from so many friends, family, and even strangers.  So many of these friends and others have helped raise thousands of dollars to help the Kelly’s with their expenses.

This blog tells Gracie’s story and is updated by her aunt (Leah), May’s sister.

Gracie loves reading your comments so drop a note and say hello!  We hope you’ll join us in praying for Gracie.  Our hope is in God.

Jeremiah 29:11 -For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

UPDATES

As of April 2010: Gracie’s condition is good!  She’s physically strong and experiencing less problems physically than she was a year ago.  She still has palsy on one side of her body, but she is now able to walk, eat and do many things on her own that she hadn’t before.  She also started attending school again!  She goes to her 2nd grade class 3 half-days a week and receives tutoring at home one afternoon a week.

Gracie’s story first came to my attention last June, when Emmanual Episcopal Church in VA Beach, VA hosted the annual spaghetti dinner fundraiser in her honor. Her cousin, Cory, was my granddaughter’s preschool teacher. What a great event it was. Because God has his own plans for Gracie, this year’s dinner will also honor Gracie.

My prayers are that Gracie’s coming days will be fun ones for her, and she will be as comfortable as possible.

I’m sending blessings your way for the sweet little girl in your lives.

Thinking of you all, as any friend of the Larmore’s is a friend of mine! Read your blog and know that as a former hospice chaplain, this is a rich but bittersweet time. May you continue to be filled with God’s grace and love which is all of your birthrights! Gracie will always be with you. Get a “contact point” , e.g., the moon…”When I look up and see the moon, I will blow you a big fat kiss….” I will talk to you, etc. Children know so much more than we give them credit for! Special love to you all. Courage for the journey and whatever measure of peace you can manage to store! Love, Pat Holden

  5. Have you tried a Hyperbaric Chamber it increases barametric pressure and oxygen. In essence it creates a preflood enviroment and turns the body into a healing machine. It could heal her

I know that you all don’t know me and I’ve never met your family, but I want you to know that since May when I first heard of Gracie, I’ve been praying for her and all of you. I have enjoyed getting to “know” her through her pictures. She is so beautiful and has so much joy. As you’re walking through this journey, I just wanted you to know that Gracie is touching so many people’s lives. People you may never know about. I would’ve been one of those people if I hadn’t written. Through Gracie, I’ve been inspired to see joy in all things, I’ve been reminded of hope in a big God, I’ve been encouraged about walking through trials and I’ve seen grace in the face of a sweet girl. I’m blessed to know Gracie if only through a website. My prayers are with you. Be blessed!

    Hello Sweet Gracie,

It’s me “Miss Heather” you remember …from Pre-School at the Watauga Community Center. I wanted to let you know that I enjoyed very much, being your teacher then, and it was so nice to see you again at the beginning of this year when your sister Bella came to meet Miss Rebeca. You are a very special little girl and you are loved by so many people, including me! Tell your Mom I am praying for you, and your family. I love your bracelet…pink and purple are my favorite colors too! I will wear it everyday, it will remind me of how precious life is and how precious you are!! I hope I get to see you again sometime soon.

    God Bless you Gracie!!

    With Love,
    Miss Heather

    HI GRACIE!!!!!
I’m Amber and I play for the UD softball team. We’re leaving for our trip tonight, but I wanted to say hello before we left!!! I’m a senior so I’m extremely old and I play centerfield. I saw that you like eating popcorn..it’s one of my favorites too. Eating in general is one of my favorite activities, but you might have to show me a thing or two about cooking because I can eat but I sure can’t cook! Have fun at school and see you soon! I’m so exicted.
